About Me
I am an academic and user experience (UX) researcher working in the world of Human-Centred Design. I study the complex, messy and intriguing interactions between people, digital technologies and the environments in which they're used, with a view to designing new kinds of interactive computational technologies and services. I am currently Professor of Digital Living, within the School of Computer and Information Science at Northumbria University.

I have a background in psychology (University of York) and ergonomics (Loughborough University), and a PhD in computer science (University of Nottingham), where I was a member of the Mixed Reality Lab. I was formerly a Post-doc in the Socio-Digital Systems group at Microsoft Research Cambridge; a Lecturer of Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Nottingham; and Senior Lecturer of Experience-Centred Design and then Reader in Cultural Computing at Newcastle University, based in Culture Lab within a research group which I helped to grow in to Open Lab.

Research Interests
I've worked on quite a few different projects over the years, in quite diverse areas of Human-Computer Interaction (you can see my publications below). Some of my main interests however, have been in remote collaboration, video-mediated communication, tangible and surface computing, physical-digital hybridity, personal archiving / digital storage and the future of memorialisation and 'technologies of memory'.

In particular in recent years I have become increasingly interested in ideas around 'situated computing' and I am actively exploring topics such as Human-Building Interaction. Much of my work has involved studying domestic environments and has attempted to consider how technology might support or perturb relationships in the home and the ways in which technology is 'made at home' in the domestic environment. This is evolving in to a serious concern for smart home technologies (especially given the rise of the IoT) and the interplay between people, place and technology.

My work increasingly adopts design research methods, and I am keen to explore the creative development of provocative technologies to explore socio-technical relationships.
